Eczema - a Time for Caring!

If allowed to, eczema can be a deeply frustrating and at times, thoroughly depressing condition for the millions of sufferers world wide. The itching that it generates, can drive someone to distraction and the dry, flaky skin which is a chief characteristic of the complaint, can totally wreck a persons self-confidence. The good news, however, is that none of this need be the case; for with a little more care, the eczema can be comfortably managed, and those affected can lead a perfectly normal life style. Much of successful eczema management can be put down to basic common sense. There are no major life changing adjustments to be made, just simple consideration to the primary causes, followed by undemanding modifications to the daily activities that could be aggravating the situation.

It is accepted that eczema is made worse when the skin loses it's natural oils, it becomes less supple, dried out and starts to itch. To counter this, it is critical to avoid hot soapy water and detergents that will de-moisturise and dry out the skin. Instead of soap, an aqueous cream (or greasy emulsifying ointment) as a substitute is recommended. This will moisturise the skin and reduce water loss, as will an emollient bath oil, or medicated shower gels and shampoos. By providing a seal or barrier, the skin is less dry, itchy and more comfortable. These products are safe to use as often as is necessary, are readily available on the high street and can drastically improve the severity of the affected area. Tobacco smoke has been known to bring about a reaction, so avoiding such environments will obviously counter this. Certain food types have a history of triggering an attack of eczema, so again, if it can be established exactly which, then steering clear is the natural solution. The most widely recognised foodstuff responsible for inducing such an a effect include: eggs; milk; wheat; acidic fruits; peanuts and seafood. Fancy a nice steak?
